OCD & ERP
I specialise in supporting adults living with mild to severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), by providing both comprehensive assessment and treatment of OCD.
This is in addition to mental health challenges that can often co-occur with OCD, such as anxiety, depression, social isolation, and relationship challenges.
I completed part of my clinical training within the OCD Inpatient Program at The Melbourne Clinic, during which I have developed a strong interest and enthusiasm for working with people who experience OCD.
OCD Assessment
Experiencing obsessive thoughts, rumination, and compulsive behaviours are a common part of the human experience. However for some of us, these experiences can start to impact our daily life.
For some, it is important to explore whether a diagnosis of OCD is applicable for them. Others prefer to gain a good understanding of their own experience and how this may have become more challenging over time, rather than having a diagnosis confirmed.
Finding the right support for OCD can be challenging. I aim to work with each individual to explore their current concerns and goals for therapy, using gold-standard assessments for OCD diagnosis and symptom severity. These assessments then allow us to monitor how effective any subsequent treatment is over time.
Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is the gold-standard, evidence-based approach for the treatment of OCD.
It is a specific form of a commonly known therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). CBT involves identifying thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and bodily sensations, and exploring how these experiences may be interlinked.
ERP involves working collaboratively with a therapist in facing your fears in a slow, graded manner, without relying upon rituals or compulsions. The goal of ERP is to increase ones’ tolerance to uncertainty, discomfort, and other emotions.
Sessions involve identifying different situations and tasks which will likely induce such emotions, before then planning and conducting these tasks.
